A group of very kind mice are hard at work in Pinellas County. The Kind Mouse isn't a group of animals; they're people who are feeding needy families.

Gina Wilkins heads up the group, which she says offers a safety net.

“We assist families in transition and feed their hungry children," she said. "There are the local families here in Pinellas county who lost everything due to the economy. They’re educated career people who just one day woke up and their career was gone."

She doesn't stop there. Her organization also feeds other hungry kids. Volunteers pack bags of food that go into backpacks, which students take home. They 're filled with food to eat over the weekend. For some children, it's the only way to get a meal after Friday afternoon.

Wilkins' work was inspired by a 2011 60 Minutes documentary, "Hard Time Generation: Homeless Kids". Her husband is a freelance photographer who helped put it together. The documentary chronicles the plight of the "new poor" in Seminole County and a backpack program for the hungry.

Wilkins said it was all the inspiration she needed.

“I said I want to do that in Pinellas county," Wilkins said. "We need to do that. We have kids in our backyard who are hungry. We need to do something now. So The Kind Mouse was born on that."

Funding for The Kind Mouse comes from the support of several agencies as well, as fundraisers and donations from individuals.

“I don’t see me as a hero. It’s our whole litter. It’s all of our mice. It’s our whole community,” Wilkins said.
