Widening a road is supposed to alleviate traffic congestion.

But at one spot in Seminole, the idea of widening lanes has created more gridlock.

Now that construction along Bryan Dairy Road is done, traffic moves well along six lanes. But as the road feeds into 102nd Avenue North, those six lanes become four at 98th Street North.

By the time the road gets just past 113th Street North, the four lanes squeeze to two.

But widening was previously decided against, according to Ken Jacobs, with Pinellas County Public Works.

"The residents decided that wasn't probably in their best interests, so the county actually took that project off their Capital Improvement Program," Jacobs said.

Residents of Thurston Groves subdivision and other neighborhoods often have trouble pulling out of their development onto the busy road.

Then there is the Pinellas Trial. The trail has its own crossing signal and cyclists and pedestrians have the ability to stop traffic with the push of a button.

"A couple months ago, we added a little bit more time to the (traffic signal), so 102nd Avenue wouldn't turn as often," Jacobs said. "Then based on this call and the opening of Bryan Dairy we went back out again and we added some additional time."

Jacobs also said a trail overpass at the spot also is not likely given how close the approach ramp would come close to the properties of nearby residents.

In order for 102nd Avenue to be widened at this point, the area residents would need to approach the county then the funds would need to be found to add the project back to a long term traffic plan.
