The Florida Highway Patrol has released more information on a crash that killed one and closed the intersection of Dale Mabry Highway and Bearss Avenue Sunday morning.
Troopers said a 1998 Ford Explorer, headed north on Dale Mabry, failed to stop at a red light and hit a 2003 Ford Expedition turning left onto Bearss Ave.
The Explorer's driver, 20-year-old Michael Backus of Odessa, died at the scene after his SUV spun, overturned, hit a street sign and burst into flames.
The Expedition's driver, 49-year-old Edward Scanlon of Tampa, went to St. Joseph's Hospital in serious condition.
His passenger, 43-year-old Michael Scanlon of North Carolina, also went to St. Joseph's Hospital in serious condition.
