An 18-year-old man was shot by a Hernando County Sheriff's deputy Wednesday night in a Spring Hill neighborhood.

According to reports, Deputy Ramona Fuhs responded to the 4000 block of Candler Avenue shortly before 9 p.m. to investigate a report of a suspicious person.

Once she arrived at the scene, Fuhs was confronted by Joseph R. Berrios, the report said.  That's when investigators said the deputy shot Berrios.

Neighbor Tony Rollo heard a commotion outside his window and then gunfire.

"Just two bang, bang right in a row and like I said I ducked down below the window,” said Rollo. “When I peeked up to look out the window is when I saw the police cruiser there and the deputy was actually standing up pointing the gun at the guy on the ground saying stay still, don’t get up, stay down, stay down.”

Berrios was taken to a local hospital with injuries that are not life-threatening. He has been charged with battery of a law enforcement officer.  Bond has been set at $10,000.

Berrios's sister-in-law said he comes from a loving family and played football in high school. She can’t believe he would attack a deputy and she wonders why the deputy didn’t use a Taser.

Fuhs was also taken to a local hospital, where she received treatment for her injuries. She has since been released.

Fuhs has been placed on paid administrative leave while the shooting is under investigation by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, which will review the use of deadly force.
