February 5, 2013 Duke Energy announces it will permanently close the Crystal River nuclear plant.

Sept. 1, 2012 The company's new board meets for the first time to discuss the broken nuclear plant.

July 2, 2012 Duke Energy purchased Progress Energy and made it a wholly owned direct unit of Duke Energy.

October 2011 Officials announce clean up of the facility could cost as much as $2.5 billion, with customers expected to pay 1/4 of the cost.

Plant officials conduct media tour of plant, to show public the facility is secure.

June 2011 Progress Energy announces plans not to expect plant to restart operations until 2014.

April 2011 Plant officials announce plans to repair plant and return to full functionality.

September 2009 During a facility upgrade, workers discovered a 42-inch gap in the concrete containment dome. The plant has sat idle since.

Florida Progress Corporation bought by Carolina Power & Light to form the new company, Progress Energy.

March 13, 1977 Crystal River Nuclear Plant commissioned.
