Police are warning Winter Haven residents about a fake computer technical support scam.

Investigators say the scam works like this:

A phone call is received, usually in the evening, in which the caller claims the resident's computer has been compromised or a malfunction has been detected. The resident is instructed to turn on the computer so a fix can be installed.

The caller then tells the resident where to click, allowing the caller remote access to vital information. As if that isn't enough, the caller sometimes requests credit card information to pay for the tech support.

Often, spyware has already been installed on the computer from a virus download received through a picture or file from an unknown sender, police said. Sometimes the file appears to come from someone familiar.

Police said the scammers target the senior population, but all ages can be victims. They advise that residents immediately hang up if a caller asks for computer access or personal information.

Members of the Crime Prevention Unit at the Winter Haven Police Department will address church groups, civic organizations or other groups about the scams if asked. The department can be reached at 863-295-5905.
