A 10-year-old boy is in critical condition after deputies said he was accidentally shot in the head with a BB gun.

Deputies said the boy was outside his home in Frostproof on Wednesday evening, shooting targets with his 13-year-old brother, when the older child shot him in the head.

According to the report, the 13-year-old boy pointed his gun at the younger boy, hitting him in the head at close range. The shooting appears to be accidental, deputies said.

The boy told his mother what had happened, and emergency services were notified.  Deputies said the younger boy was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa, where he remains in critical condition.

Detectives said the boys were unsupervised at the time. The mother was inside the home making dinner, and her boyfriend, who lives with them, was also inside, the report said.

The investigation into the shooting continues.
