Bartow police arrested a woman Wednesday they said carried a weapon and drugs onto the grounds of a middle school.

According to an arrest report, the school resource officer at Bartow Middle School was called to the guidance office just before 9 a.m. The officer said he immediately noticed a firearm in the waistband of a woman who was in the office.

The officer took the weapon away, searched the woman's purse and found a stun gun, a plastic baggie containing a white powdery substance, a straw and a pill of tramadol hydrochloride, police said.

"She does have a state issued concealed weapons permit. However, those guidelines list where you cannot take a firearm even with a permit. Those include courthouses, schools and other various locations," said Sgt. David Wyant, Bartow Police. "During the post arrest interview she told me that she just forgot. That she carries a gun with her for protection and she simply forgot she had it with her."

Police said the white powdery substance turned out to be methamphetamine.

Lisa Marie Palmes, 41, was arrested.

"I've had some parent-teacher conferences in my days as well and I've never taken a firearm with me to discuss the issues," Wyant said.

Palmes faces a number of charges, including possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia and violation of license to carry a concealed weapon.
