A 16-year-old St. Petersburg girl riding in an SUV driven by another teenage girl was killed in a crash in northeast St. Petersburg on Friday evening, police said.

According to police, 16-year-old Christina Shiver was driving a Ford Escape SUV west on 40th Avenue Northeast in the 1300 block when she became distracted and stopped looking at the roadway for a moment.

Police said the SUV veered to the right, jumped the north curb and went up onto a sidewalk. The vehicle then rode up onto the concrete barriers that separate the roadway and the north sidewalk along the bridge that connects to the Shore Acres neighborhood.

This caused the left side of the vehicle to become elevated while the right side traveled along close to the sidewalk. Metal guardrails that lined the north wall of the bridge pierced through the passenger's side windshield, killing Alexia Douglas upon impact, police said.

The crash happened about 6:55 p.m. and drew a crowd of onlookers to the scene before sunset.

Shiver, also from St. Petersburg, was treated at All Children's Hospital for minor injuries and released.

Police said the investigation is ongoing.
