An Amber Alert has been issued for two children taken from their grandmother's home Wednesday morning.

"We do feel that they are in danger do to the nature, the means in which they were taken,” said Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office Cpl. Kevin Bodie.

Warrants have also been issued for the arrest of the children's father, Joshua Hakken. He is wanted on charges of kidnapping, interference in child custody, child neglect, false imprisonment, burglary with a battery and grand theft auto.

Deputies say the children's mother, Sharyn Hakken, has not yet been charged with any crime. However, detectives believe that she is traveling with her husband and her children and may have been driving the second car that picked her husband and children up after they left the grandparent's house.

Detectives have been at the parents' house all night long, searching for any clues about where they might have taken them.

"It's uncertain if there were any weapons involved. None that have been disclosed," said Bodie.

The Hakken's neighbors in south Tampa say the family fit in well, even showing up for a neighborhood garage sale.

"The gentleman came over, very nice, looked like a south Tampa kind of guy with a darling little boy and we had an aquarium for sale," said neighbor stephanie coats. "He was all excited actually about buying it for the little boy."

Detectives: Suspect tied up mother-in-law, abducted children

Authorities say Joshua Hakken broke into the Tampa home of his mother-in-law, who is the children's grandmother, just after 6 a.m. Wednesday.

Officials said Hakken tied his mother-in-law up, then woke up the two children and took them from the home while they were still in their pajamas. Hakken fled the home in her 2009 silver Toyota Camry.

Her Camry was later found abandoned several blocks from her home on Shady Shores Drive.  Detectives said they believe Hakken and the children got into another vehicle and fled to an unknown location.

Authorities are looking for the children, 2-year-old Chase and 4-year-old Cole Hakken, who could possibly be in a black 2006 GMC pickup with Florida tag U95-KT registered to Joshua Hakken. Deputies believe Sharyn Hakken may be with them as well.

Chase Hakken is 3 feet tall, weighs 33 pounds, has brown hair and brown eyes.  He was last seen wearing pajamas. Cole Hakken is 3 feet 9 inches tall, weighs 44 pounds, has brown hair and brown eyes.  He was also last seen wearing pajamas.

Detectives said both subjects should be considered armed and dangerous.

Details emerging about family's history

Authorities released some preliminary information about the family's history leading up to Wednesday morning's events.  According to authorities, Hakken was previously involved in an attempted armed abduction of their children in Louisiana.

Officials said they have so far been able to determine that Joshua Hakken was arrested in a hotel on multiple drug charges in St. Tammany Parrish, Louisiana, where he had just attended some type of anti-government rally.

According to the arrest report, Joshua said the family was headed to California, motivated by a series of science fiction books called "Temple of the Winds" that had changed their lives. He told police they needed to make it to California ahead of Armageddon.

At some point after the arrest, the state of Louisiana took custody of both children and placed them in temporary foster care.  While the children were at the foster care facility, investigators said Joshua Hakken allegedly showed up at the facility waving a gun and started beating on the front door.

Hakken reportedly fled the scene without his children after he was unable to get into the secured facility.

"The parents did attempt to do an abduction or reclaiming of the children from a foster home that they were placed in in Louisiana. It was a secure facility and they were unable to make the reclaim of their children at that point," said Cpl. Bodie.

On Tuesday, the Hakkens were notified that the State of Louisiana had terminated all parental rights and had turned those rights over to the grandparents.

Officials said they still have unanswered questions about the family's history and that they are working with Louisiana state officials and FBI agents to fill in the gaps of information.
