Currently about 25 cities and towns are known to have laid claim to being the birthplace of Memorial Day, including Macon and Columbus, Ga., Richmond, Va.,  Boalsburg, Pa. and Carbondale, Ill. Approximately 25 places have been named in connection with the origin of Memorial Day, many of them in the South where most of the war dead were buried.

In 1966, President Lyndon Johnson and Congress declared Waterloo, NY to be the official birthplace of Memorial Day, as a ceremony there on May 5, 1866 had honored local veterans.  Supporters say this was the first time Memorial Day had been observed as a community-wide event.
