A St. Petersburg police officer is back on the job - almost a year after being fired over a deadly crash.

In February 2012, Officer Mehmedin Karic was driving his police cruiser more than 20 mph above the speed limit when he hit and killed a man in a wheelchair.

Harold Charles Fleming, 45, died after being hit by the cruiser on 38th Avenue N at 66th Street. An investigation revealed Karic was driving 61 mph in a 40-mph zone at the time of the crash.

In August, Police Chief Chuck Harmon fired Karic for violating traffic laws.

According to partner newspaper the Tampa Bay Times, an arbitrator has ruled Karic should have his job back — and receive $35,000 in back pay.

Karic returned to work on Monday.
