A pan left unattended on a stove is being blamed for a fire that damaged an Inverness house Monday afternoon.

The fire broke out at a home in the 2900 block of Skyline Drive shortly before 2:30 p.m.

Firefighters arrived at the single-family house and found heavy smoke showing from the interior of the home. Crews were able to quickly bring the fire under control, mostly confining it to the kitchen.

Investigators said the fire started on the stove. The resident was apparently heating oil in a pan, then went outside.  When the resident came back inside, the oil had caught on fire and spread to the cabinets in the kitchen, the report said.

No one was injured in the fire.

The damage to the house and the contents is estimated at $45,000.
