A hole approximately 6 feet wide and approximately 30 feet deep has opened in the middle of a north Tampa road.

As a result, 138th Avenue at Bruce B. Downs Boulevard is shut down.

According to deputies, a 2010 Nissan Versa was on top of the pavement as the hole began opening. The driver, Jasmine Rosa, a local college student, accelerated off the road but suffered damage to her tires from the broken pavement.

The car had to be towed from the scene. The driver was not injured.

"It did some wheel damage, a little bit of body damage, nothing that totaled it, but it definitely makes it inoperable right now,” said Robert Reichold, with Split Second Towing.

City official told us it was a sewer problem that caused the hole to form. He says it's probably going to take about four days to fix it. They say the hole is located over a 36-inch gravity sewer pipe.

Reichold calls Rosa a "lucky lady."

"She walked over there and looked in the hole and she saw that it could have been a lot worse,” said Reichold. “I explained to her, parts can be replaced but her taking a nose dive in that thing would have been a lot worse."

The city says there haven't been any problems with the sewer service in the area because of this. Crews are currently trying to come up with a strategy to fix the hole.
