The Anna Maria Island Turtle Watch and Shorebird Monitoring group says Tropical Storm Andrea destroyed 15 turtle nests.

As of June 7, the organization says there were 50 nests before the Andrea's storm surge hit the beach.

Director Suzi Fox says losses could have been much worse.

The storm also affected the black skimmer population.

High winds, rain and storm surge also wiped out the bird's nesting colony on the island.

However, more than 200 skimmers have returned to rebuild.
