One city commissioner is calling on the police chief in Lakeland to draw a detailed plan on how to clean up the police department that is currently facing a sexual scandal.

The Lakeland Police Department is in crisis mode after several officers were accused of having sex with one civilian employee. The woman says the officers had sex with her on the job, in city buildings, and in squad cars.

City Commissioner Howard Wiggs said the police chief needs to clean up the mess.

“Within one week, I want a written plan from the chief as to what issues are being addressed. As we all know this is more than just a sex scandal,” said Wiggs.

It’s the most recent black eye for the department. A Lakeland officer was recently reprimanded for asking a woman to shake her bra during a traffic stop. There’s also a grand jury investigation into violation of public records request laws.

Although commissioners believe the department as a whole is trustworthy, they want to dig even deeper.

“If we don’t get a plan that is acceptable as far as restoring confidence in the commission that we could get this done, I would call for a third party independent investigator to come in and critique our department,” said Wiggs.

Chief Lisa Womack had no comment about the commissioners’ request, but earlier this week said she vowed to punish any officers who were involved in the scandal.
