According to a new report out this week, chemotherapy may be going by the wayside.

Researchers say a new drug is treating some cancer just as successfully as chemotherapy but with fewer side effects.

Doctors at Moffitt Cancer center say it's a good thing for patients.

"This is an exciting time, there's no doubt about it,” said Dr. Bijal Shah, Moffit Cancer Center. “What we have the ability to do now is to treat people with oral medicines to obtain the same kinds of remissions we were getting with much more intensive and often in-patient chemotherapy."

Two new studies show that the drug has up to an 83-percent survival rate after patients were treated for two years.
