St. Petersburg's annual Gay Pride Parade and street festival wasn't slowed down by rain Saturday.

Organizers said as many as 150,000 people may have attended - the high number due, in large part, to two major rulings from the U.S. Supreme Court earlier this week.

The Supreme Court made history by declaring DOMA, or the Defense of Marriage Act, and California’s Proposition 8, both unconstitutional. Both rulings were considered wins for equality for the LGBT community.

Parade-goers lined the streets Saturday, dodging rain for most of the day. Still, the celebration continued.

"This is so important this year with all the politics going on," said Ilona Buckner. "We’re here representing and being proud of who we are, marching for the cause and supporting businesses who support us."

St. Peterburg Council member Wengay Newton and Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn attended the event.

"To me it’s a human issue," Buckhorn said. "It’s making sure everyone that elected me, I represent know that their contributions are valued."

Parade-goers said in the middle of the revelry and celebration, it is important to remember how far the community - and country - has come.

"It means for one after all these years of being told no, no, no for so many years that we can’t love somebody in a formal manner, now we can," said Eric Skain of St. Petersburg. "We can now say we can love somebody and live our lives just like anyone else can."
