An elementary school held a gun trade-in program this weekend.

Yes, an elementary school. But the guns being taken in were toys.

Strobridge Elementary Principal Charles Hill said he decided to host the exchange because he thinks playing with toy guns desensitizes children to firearms and increases the chance they'll use the real ones when the grow up.

The children who surrendered their toy arms Saturday left with an armful of books and a chance to win a new bike.

Police officers were also invited to the event to teach children about safety.
