Two people were seriously injured in a crash involving a wrong-way driver that closed the southbound lanes of the Howard Frankland Bridge early Sunday, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

The crash happened just after 6 a.m. According to troopers, Jessica Hicks, 21, of Plant City was driving a 2012 Scion north on I-275 in the southbound inside lane just north of Fourth Street N.

Jon Zimmerman, 29, of Morton, Ill. was traveling south in the same lane in a 2013 Nissan. He saw Hicks' car coming toward him and steered to the right to avoid a crash, but the vehicles still collided, troopers said.

Both drivers were taken to Bayfront Medical Center.

Troopers said they haven't determined how Hicks entered the highway going the wrong way. Both drivers were wearing a seatbelt, and charges are pending.
