Hillsborough county workers released 300 air potato leaf beetles into Alderman's Ford County Park and Rhodine Scrub Nature Preserve.

The critters will control the growth of the non-native invasive plant by feasting on its vines.

The beetles come from the Florida Department of Agriculture - Division of Plant Industry.

Air potato vines can grow to more than 20 meters in length.

They can take over natural vegetation by smothering, shading and choking out necessary native plants.

Spraying or removing the plant is also part of managing the natural habitat.

However, because the vines grow up to one foot a day, maintenance is difficult.
