A man is dead and a woman he allegedly shot is in critical condition after an officer-involved shooting Tuesday night in St. Petersburg.

Officers say they had no choice but to shoot and fatally injure 39-year-old Carlos Crompton, who they say shot his former girlfriend and then fired at them with a .38-caliber revolver on 14th Avenue South.

Alyssa Dudley, 21, is hospitalized with gunshot wounds at Bayfront Medical Center. Family members say her prospects for survival will be "touch and go" for at least the next few days.

According to St. Petersburg police, officers responded at 8:40 p.m. to a report of multiple shots and a person shot at the Dover Apartment at 3545 30th Avenue N.

Keisha Brown is Alyssa's roommate and like a sister to Crompton. She said after three years the couple had grown apart and Crompton had a hard time accepting it.

Last night, Brown said he snapped.

"All of the sudden he's coming through the door with a gun,” she said.

Brown pushed her daughter out the door, then she said she tried to stop Crompton.

"I was trying to stop him - like no Carlos, what are you doing? He shot Alyssa, and I ran and he kept shooting,” she said.

Officers and medical personnel found Dudley inside her apartment with numerous gunshot wounds. She was transported to Bayfront as a trauma alert and underwent surgery overnight.

Officers quickly identified the shooting suspect as Crompton, who had left the area in a black Chevrolet sedan, police said. Patrol officers then began searching various addresses for the man.

Around 9:20 p.m., police said, officers found Crompton's car parked in front of a relative's home on the 4200 block of 14th Avenue South. Several officers parked a short distance away and walked up to the location.

According to police, the officers identified themselves and confronted Crompton in the front yard near his vehicle. Police said Crompton went to his car and came back with a black .38 special revolver, which he used to fire one round at officers.

Two of the officers, who are members of the department's street crimes unit, returned fire, striking Crompton, police said. Crompton was transported to Bayfront Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 10:02 p.m.

According to police, investigators learned that Crompton and Dudley had once lived together at the Dover Apartments. They have not released a motive for the shooting.

The officers, who were not injured and have not been identified, have been placed on administrative leave pending a review of the shooting.
