In just two weeks, the city of Lakeland has had five drive-by shootings, and many residents say they are living in fear as a result.

The recent shootings have happened in close proximity to each other in the northwest section of town, so Lakeland police are patrolling the neighborhood and talking to people on the street.

However, police said the victims aren't giving up too much information.

"Some of them gave us totally bogus information," Lakeland police spokesman Gary Gross said. "Try to throw us off. They don't want...they are afraid of retaliation also."

Residents like Tawana Williams agree. Williams said victims do not talk to the police because they are scared.

Police said they believe many of the shootings may result from gang drug turf wars. In fact, while officers talked to a group of young men, a K-9 hit on a cup across the street that was filled with bags of marijuana.

Residents also say arguments are now being settled with bullets.

"I mean, it wouldn't just be shootings for no reason," Jontavius Smith said. "I mean, you just see someone and just, 'Pow,' you shot 'em."

Dre Anderson, whose 19-year-old brother Rashad was shot July 10 in a drive-by along Kettles Avenue, agreed.

"That's what people doing now," he said. "Everybody carrying guns. Ain't nobody fighting no more."

Six people have been injured in the recent spate of drive-by shootings. Five of them are 21 or younger.  All of them are expected to recover.

Lakeland police are hoping scared residents will contact Crime Stoppers with information, as Crime Stoppers allows callers to remain anonymous.
