The folks at PolitiFact took a look at a statement this week from Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D) 23rd District.

She said:

  • "President Obama has the most border patrols and border security deployed at the border of any previous president."

The team rated this claim mostly true.

Katie Sanders with PolitiFact says Wasserman Schultz wants to make a point about President Obama being a tough enforcer of immigration laws and it's actually a pretty fair one.

But Sanders says, as for the sheer number of border patrol agents, Wasserman Schultz is right that under President Obama, it's the highest amount it's been. The article states that there were 21,444 border patrol agents in 2011. The number dropped slightly to 21,394 in fiscal year 2012.

The team found however, that the surge of border patrol agents really occurred under the Bush administration from 2001 to 2008. During this time the article notes, the number of agents posted nationally rose from about 9,800 to 20,000.

Sanders says that's mainly the reason the numbers are as high as they are, but she says, they have gotten a little bit higher under President Obama.

"As for the second part of her claim about border security, we found that it was a little harder to qualify. Again, there was the big border fence project that was started in the Bush administration and that was carried forward under President Obama. That's why we rated this statement mostly true," Sanders said.
