A 14-year-old boy riding a bicycle on U.S. 41 Monday evening was struck and critically injured by a hit-and-run driver, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

William Machacek of Spring Hill was airlifted to St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa. There was no update on his condition Tuesday morning.

According to troopers, Machacek was riding against traffic on the east shoulder of U.S. 41 near Painter Place around 6:14 p.m. when he was hit by a Ford Expedition driven by Nathan Wayne Young, 52, of Wesley Chapel.

Young left the scene without rendering aid and was later caught by Pasco County sheriff's deputies after a brief chase, authorities said. Young was charged with fleeing and eluding, and additional charges are pending, the FHP said.
