Belk has filed a notice that closing the its department store at the Crystal River mall will mean layoffs for 33 employees, according to the Citrus County Chronicle.

The news came a the same week as neighboring store J.C. Penney was scheduled to close.

Belk expects to close in early to mid-January. A spokeswoman told the Chronicle the decision was based on being unable to achieve financial goals because of local market and economic conditions

The layoff announcement was posted last Friday by the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity. Belk filed a WARN (Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act) notice a day earlier.

The WARN act requires most employers of 100 or more workers to give at least 60 days’ advance notice of a job site closing or mass layoff to affected workers or their representatives.

Earlier this summer, as Belk celebrated its 125th year in business, employees participated in community service projects, including working on improvements at Crystal River Primary School.

The Citrus County Economic Development Council considers the mall one of its sites for potential new businesses. This month, a miniature golf course opened in the former Sears location, which also hosts a monthly farmer’s market and an office for a chapter of Disabled American Veterans.
