Strong storms blew across southern Pinellas County Friday creating a waterspout that left damage at a St. Petersburg marina.

Heavy thunderstorms moved through the area just after noon with gusty winds that damaged covered slips at the Maximo Marina on 37th Street South. According to a witness at the marina, the waterspout sent sheet metal flying into the air.

Part of the roof of the slip was left crumpled after the brief storm.

"A strong thunderstorm was over extreme southern Pinellas county from 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Torrential rain and wind pelted Pinellas Point west to Eckerd College and Isla del Sol," said Bay News 9 Meteorologist Diane Kacmarik. "Klystron 9 detected strong winds in the area at the time of the damage (to Maximo Marina)."

Rain chances are forecasted at 30 percent for Saturday.

Conditions may be similar Saturday and throughout the Labor Day weekend.
