A Citrus County family's vacation was cut short by a phone call nobody ever wants to get.

Their home in Lecanto burnt to the ground, with not even a wall left standing.

Greg Smallwood hugs his wife as they look at what's left in shock.

The fire that took their home early Sunday also got one of their cars.

"It is heartbreaking," Smallwood said. "Everything I own is gone."

Smallwood says luckily his family wasn't home when the house went up in flames. They were out of town on vacation before school starts for his two kids this week.

Now his son and daughter have nothing.

"I figured something would be left," Smallwood said. "I mean this was a pretty big house. You'd think a least a wall or bedroom or two."

Smallwood says they have plenty of family to stay with. The next step is to clean up and rebuild. The family says they love their property and they are not going anywhere.

According to the incident report the fire was started by someone smoking in the house but Smallwood says nobody was home.
