Busch Gardens in Tampa welcomed a new baby zebra Monday.

The endangered Grevy's zebra could nurse and stand on its own an hour after its birth, according to park officials.

The newborn's parents are Brooke, a 13-year-old zebra and mother of four others, and Two Step.

The gestation period for Grevy’s zebras is 13 months.

In addition to this new foal, seven female and one male Grevy’s zebras live in the attraction's Serengeti Plain.

Busch Gardens’ guests can view the baby, parents and the rest of the zebra herd from the Edge of Africa, the Skyride or Serengeti Express train ride.

The population of Grevy’s zebra has declined by more than 50 percent in the last 18 years.

They are considered endagered by international conservationists.

The SeaWorld & Busch Gardens Conservation Fund has supported Grevy’s zebra through the Grevy’s Zebra Trust in Kenya.

The Trust protects and monitors the zebra populations against poaching in northern Kenya and southern Ethiopia.
