A new feature is open on the Courtney Campbell Causeway.

The pedestrian bridge being built alongside the causeway is now open for walkers, joggers and bicyclists.

The span is the only motorless bridge over any part of the bay. The Friendship Trail Bridge, adjacent to the Gandy Bridge, closed in 2008.

The four-mile long bridge has parking available at both ends. Parking is available at the base of the bridge on the west side while two new lots between the bridge and Ben T. Davis Beach are now open on the east side.

The state Department of Transportation built the 4-mile span at a cost of $14.6 million from federal enhancement money set aside for pedestrian projects, said Kris Carson, DOT spokeswoman.

The 16-foot-wide bridge rises 45-feet above the water at its highest point.
