Hundreds of cyclists from around the Bay area rode Sunday to honor a couple struck by a hit-and-run driver on Labor Day.

Robert Lemon and Hilary Michalak were riding a tandem bicycle on the Clearwater Memorial Causeway last Monday when they were hit by a driver who left the scene. Lemon died, and his girlfriend, Michalak, is still in a hospital with critical injuries.

Cyclists made one stop along the way at the scene where Lemon was run down by a driver. His friends, fellow cyclists and even strangers paused for a moment of silence.

Christopher Patrick Weed, 29, was arrested last Tuesday and charged with one count of leaving the scene of an accident involving death and one count of leaving the scene of an accident with serious bodily injury.

Weed turned himself in but told investigators he didn't remember hitting anyone.

Sunday morning's Robert Lemon Memorial Ride started at the Ride N Roll Cyclery in Largo, where Lemon worked, and proceeded to Clearwater and then Tarpon Springs.

Lemon and Michalak moved to the area from Michigan earlier this summer. Michalak took a job as a director of youth and families at Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd Church. Lemon worked as a manager at the bike shop.

Frank Lopez, owner of Ride N Roll, said Lemon recently purchased the tandem bike and was looking forward to teaching Michalek how to ride.

"It was one of his favorite routes. It was a little bit shorter than we always do on the weekend, but he had to get to work, so he would cut the route a little shorter and make it to work on time," said Lopez.

Lemon’s death sparked a push for awareness in the Bay area.

"He was just left like a piece of road kill and that's pretty indicative of the way people look at cyclists,” said cyclist John Trebino."People don't realize that you have just as much of a right to be on the road as they do."

Lopez plans to make the ride an annual event to remember Rob.

"I just hope that we could be on the roads and feel safe, I don't feel safe unless I’m with a group,” said cyclist Zach Fout. “I have a 3-year-old daughter and a 10-month-old son that I want to come home to. All I want to do is just go out and ride my bike."
