Largo firefighters rescued a man Monday after sheets of quartz fell on him.

According to deputies, the worker, identified as 45 year-old Sergio Alvarez, was unloading several pallets of quartz being delivered to Pelican International in Largo.

The pallets were up on their side. As he released one of the pallets to unload it, the supports broke.

Deputies say approximately 10 sheets of quartz contained in the pallet fell on him and pinned him between the sheets and another pallet.

Deputies say the each sheet weighed approximately 1,000 pounds for a total of 10,000 pounds.

Firefighters from various agencies responded to extricate Alvarez. The process took about 30-45 minutes.

Alvarez was transported by air to Bayfront Medical Center for treatment. Deputies described his injuries as  non-life threatening.

Officials said the man was conscious and alert as he was rescued. One firefighter said the man was pinned from the waist down.

Deputies say the incident appears to be accidental in nature.
