A driver going the wrong way caused a four-car Interstate 75 crash early Friday in Hillsborough County.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash happened on I-75 near mile marker 240 just before 2 a.m.

Troopers were called about a Jeep striking a Toyota Corolla while the Jeep was driving north in the southbound lanes.

At the same time, a Ford Expedition, which was also headed south, swerved to avoid the crash and rolled onto the shoulder of the road, troopers said. Then, a Ford Mustang struck debris from the first crash.

The driver of the Jeep, Daniel Lee, 44, of Valdosta, Ga. and Corolla driver Erica Johnston, 24, of Sarasota were both taken to Tampa General Hospital.

There were no other injuries.

The crash closed the southbound lanes for about two hours. The crash remains under investigation and charges against Lee are pending.
