The beginning stages of a road improvement project are underway in the heart of Inverness.

The plan is to repave part of State Road 44 from South Pleasant Grove Road to Cherry Avenue. The actual resurfacing is expected to start in the next few weeks.

Jeremy Barton uses the stretch of road all the time and isn't happy about the news.

"Traffic is already congested as it is," he said.

Transportation officials say there will be lane closures during the project. They will happen at night between 8:30 p.m. and 7 a.m.

Transportation leaders also say sidewalks and some traffic signals will be replaced. The project is expected to be done by this coming spring but until then things are going to be slow going.

Autumn Gardner plans to pack some extra patients when she's in this part of town.

"Probably try to avoid it as much as possible," she said.

So for right now most of the work is being done on the side of the road, but pretty soon that will change.

Transportation leaders says once this project is done, they will then repave State Road 44 from Cherry Avenue to U.S. 41.
