A 31-year-old Oldsmar woman was arrested early Wednesday on DUI charges after driving the wrong way on the Veterans Expressway.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Maria Fernanda Bolivar was stopped by troopers after driving northbound in the southbound lanes of the Veterans near Gunn Highway in Tampa.

A trooper received a call just before 1:30 a.m. about the driver, responded to the area and waited. He immediately stopped the white 2012 Nissan SUV traveling in the wrong direction when it appeared moments later.

The caller can be heard in the 911 call saying the following:

"I'm approaching Gunn Highway and there's some people who've been honking at him but he doesn't appear to be getting off anywhere soon here."

There was no wrong-way crash involved.

Maria Fernanda Bolivar was extremely intoxicated and disoriented, according to the trooper's report. She was arrested and charged with DUI and driving on the wrong side of a divided highway.

The arresting trooper said Bolivar stated she was coming from a bar along MacDill Avenue and headed to her Oldsmar home.

She was taken to the Hillsborough County Jail where she refused a breath test.

The incident follows five wrong-way crashes this year in the Bay area, mostly on one stretch of Interstate 275 in Tampa, that have killed 11 people.
