Boaters who had been stranded in a marsh near the Gulf of Mexico in Hudson for over a day were rescued by deputies Wednesday.

Avid treasure hunter Larry Davis said he and a friend took his traveler boat to search for buried treasures at devil’s rock yard. Shortly after, Davis realized they were heading the wrong way.

“I was a little further north than when I thought,” said Davis.

As he turned around he discovered that he was in too shallow of an area.

“I knew what I got myself into the minute I seen it, but when you are looking through 75 feet of salt grass and another island of water, you can’t tell what the depth is,” said Davis.

Davis and his friend found themselves stuck with boat in about eight inches of mud and salt grass. He tried to dig out his boat but had no luck. Before his cell phone died he called his wife for help.

Davis and his friend decided to stay put overnight until help arrived.

“We got bit up by bugs all night, that wasn’t fun,” he said.

The sheriff’s office dispatched its marine unit and rescued Larry and his friend between Fillman’s Bayou and Sea Pines in the salt marshes.

Davis’ boat is still stuck in the marsh and has been there since Wednesday, he plans to bring out of that area this week.
