Gonzalo has strengthened to a Category 3 hurricane with 115 mph winds as it moves over the open Atlantic.

A turn toward the north-northwest is forecast by late Wednesday. On the forecast track, the center of Gonzalo will remain well to the east of the Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands.

Additional strengthening is expected. Forecasters predict the system could become a Category 4 hurricane by Thursday.

"It is still no threat to the U.S. and no immediate threat to land, but Bermuda will be watching it as it moves north the next couple days," said Bay News 9 Meteorologist Brian McClure.

Gonzalo is moving toward the northwest near 13 mph, and a turn toward the north-northwest is forecast by late Wednesday.

Hurricane force winds extend outward up to 25 miles from the center and tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 115 miles.
