This weekend an event in Tampa will turn Kennedy Boulevard into a literal path for bikes.
The Florida Department of Transportation would like to introduce you to Cyclovia.
"It's inspired by a weekly activity that happens in Bogota, Colombia,” said Stephen Benson, Bike and Pedestrian Safety Specialist with FDOT. “That's where it started, this concept of Cyclovia."
They close the streets, and allow the bikes to take over -- think of it as a street party on wheels.
Orlando hosted its first Cyclovia in April. Tampa will host this Sunday and Benson said talks have already started to include more local cities.
"We're actually speaking also to the City of St. Petersburg about coming out there in May and doing a similar event, and then also to the City of Temple Terrace,” said Benson. “They're very interested as well.”
Karen Kress, the Director of Transportation and Planning with Tampa Downtown Partnership, wants the public to experience Kennedy Boulevard like never before.
"Everything's happening in the street,” said Kress. “You're opportunity to stand in the middle of Kennedy Boulevard and not get run over!"
There will be all kinds of fun events on Sunday, including a bike race. But in this race, fast doesn't win.
"We're going to have a slow bike race,” said Kress. “The last one to cross the finish line wins. We're going to have Bike Valet. We're going to have a DJ. We're going to have a stage with live music, local bands all day long. We're going to have a whole fitness, healthy living zone with free Zumba classes."
Blood pressure checks, flu shots, and free chair massages will also be available.
Bike rentals will be available for the day.
There will also be two valet stations to keep your bike safe while you're enjoying the event.
