A plan to reroute trains around downtown Lakeland appears to be dead for now.

According to The Ledger of Lakeland, there's no money available to come up with the necessary plans to develop alternate routes.

Some $3.5 million has been invested in a study launched about six years ago in response to concerns by downtown Lakeland citizens about the impact of increased freight traffic.

The concerns arose because of a deal between the state and CSX to reroute freight traffic around downtown Orlando to accommodate the Sunrail commuter rail system, according to The Ledger. Also, CSX relocated its freight terminal from south of Orlando to the south side of Winter Haven. The new, modern logistics center opens Thursday.

According to The Ledger, the only plans currently on the table are pedestrian walkways over or under the tracks in downtown Lakeland, warning signs on Florida Avenue to allow motorists to seek alternative routes when train traffic is causing backups and highway overpasses on State Road 60 and Recker Highway.
