The outbreak at Cambridge Christian School in Tampa that has sickened almost 80 students appears to be a case of the flu.

But for the rest of the week - high school classes here have been canceled as the school monitors elementary and middle school students.

The flu outbreak was noticed Monday when 74 students, one-third of high school students (9-12 grades), called in sick.

Some had soar throats, others were running fevers.

To stop the spread of the flu, School Head Tim Euler said in addition to the closure the school has hired a crew to deep clean the gym, cafeteria, classrooms, bathrooms, hallways, and lockers.

He said the school celebrated Homecoming over the weekend so students were together a lot. He thinks that may have contributed to the outbreak.

"Let's be honest, we all work in an environment where we communicate with each other daily," Euler said. "And so our students are rubbing shoulders with each other daily and passing germs along and that's normal school."

Euler said the Middle School and Elementary School have seen a normal number of absences so classes for those students have not been canceled.

He said he expects the high school to reopen on Monday.
