After being a category 4 for just one advisory earlier today, Hurricane Gonzalo is back down to a category 3.

"The eye which was small and clear earlier has filled in and is no longer visible on satellite," said Bay News 9 Chief Meteorologist Mike Clay.

Gonzalo was the first category 4 hurricane in the Atlantic since Ophelia became a category 4 for just one advisory in 2011.  This is the longest stretch without a category 4 in the Atlantic since the modern-satellite era began in the mid 1970s.

Gonzalo could still threaten Bermuda on Friday as a major hurricane. The forecast track is just to the west of the small islands.
