Despite a major setback, a controversial haunted house in Manatee County will open its doors tonight.

The York Drive Project is opening as scheduled at a home in West Bradenton. The group was worried they wouldn’t be able to pull everything off after having to rip down a major part of the haunted house a few weeks ago.

Jessica and Brad Myers said code enforcement informed them that a large section from their setup in the front yard needed to be removed, or they’d be fined.

They said the set- up was an "illegal accessory structure" and it needed to be moved to the back of the house.

The group complied and had to tear down what they'd already built. They thought it would put them behind, however, organizers said they worked together and got it all done.

“We just worked hard,” said James Bryington. “The city told us we had to take it down, so we got all of our friends together and got it all taken down. We moved it to the back and it’s better than it ever was.”

The haunted house is located at: 3512 York Drive West in Bradenton.

This year’s theme is "Portals of Terror." The haunted house will  be open from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

It will also be open October 24, 25, 31, and November 1.

There is no admission fee, however visitors are asked to make a donation.

Proceeds from the haunted house will go to the Safe Children's Coalition, a local agency for abused and neglected children.

Last year the group raised about $600. They’re hoping to increase that number this year.

On November 1, the group is holding a food drive.

Visitors are asked to bring canned food and more to get in. This will be donated to the local food bank.
