An elementary school student was struck by a vehicle Thursday morning in Lakeland.

According to Lakeland police, the 8-year-old girl was hit at 7:30 a.m. in the 3700 block of Cleveland Height Boulevard, near Carlton Palmore Elementary.

The girl, Brianna Rivera, was crossing the roadway walking west and stepped in front of the vehicle at which time she was hit. The vehicle, 2012 Honda Accord, driven by 85-year-old Iam Peter Bhisitkul, was southbound in the inside lane.

Bhisitkul stated he never saw Rivera and only heard something strike his vehicle. He then came to a control stop in the median area and got out and observed that Rivera had been hit.

Rivera was transported to Arnold Palmer Hospital as a trauma alert due to a head injury. Rivera's mother said that she is home and doing better. She has a small skull fracdture and some stitches.

Bhisitkul was not issued a citation. He did stop and let Rivera use his cell phone to call her mom and 911.
