A major Bay area grocery store chain is scaling back its coupon policy.

Effective Thursday, Publix is limiting some of its coupon use.

A few years ago, Publix updated coupon guidelines to keep up with the pace of extreme couponing. Now, the Lakeland-based grocery store is cracking down to make sure coupon users are not abusing its policies.

Some of the new guidelines include:

  • Not accepting coupons presented on a mobile phone.
  • Not accepting coupons that appear to be copied. All coupons must be originals.

The store also is limiting coupon redemption to only eight uses of the same coupon per day, per household.

And now, customers will need a manager's approval for individual coupons of more than $5.

Even with these changes, Publix officials say the store will still offer their popular Buy One-Get One Free specials.

The store also will continue to accept competitors' coupons as long as they're within the new guidelines.
