The Pinellas County Schools police department is returning assault rifles purchased through a government surplus program.

The department purchased 28 M16s for its officers. They received the normally-priced $1,000 guns for $50 each.

But according to our partners at the Tampa Bay Times, Chief Rick Stelljes decided to return them after doing some "reflecting."

Superintendent Mike Grego also wrote a letter earlier this week recommending they be returned.

The weapons were purchased without the knowledge of the school board. The board said this is something they should have been consulted on.
