African journalists are no longer invited to the University of South Florida St. Petersburg due to fears of Ebola.

That’s the message from Vice-Chancellor Han Reichgelt in a letter to students, faculty and staff.

Fourteen African journalists were part of an international group of journalists visiting next week as part of the U.S. Department of State Edward R. Murrow program.

The vice—chancellor states: “We cancelled out of (the) upmost caution due to concerns about transmission of the Ebola virus.”

Part of the five day training program involves a half day visit to The Poynter Institute for Media Studies.

Institute president Tim Franklin says the move is unfortunate but, “I’m sure (USF) was looking out for the best interest of their students and their faculty in making this decision.”

Syracuse University and the University of Georgia have also rescinded invitations to journalists either from Africa or who’ve been to Africa to report on the epidemic.
