St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman proposed on Tuesday raising the minimum wage for city workers to $12.50 an hour.

Speaking on the steps of City Hall, Kriseman made the announcement as part of his "city of opportunity" vision.

The mayor also said he supports the "ban the box" initiative, which would eliminate job candidates from automatically having to disclose previous arrests on city job applications, according to partner newspaper the Tampa Bay Times.

At least 65 city workers would get raises under the plan.

Negotiations are ongoing with the worker's union.
