The St. Petersburg Pier's current form may live on after all.

A new engineering study shows the landmark inverted pyramid stands up well to the state's current structural building codes, according to partner newspaper the Tampa Bay Times.

The analysis indicates the pier, built in 1973, is structurally sound and could be renovated to last another 75 years.

The $7,500 engineering study was conducted by the Structures Group of Tampa.

Some St. Petersburg residents, along with community and city leaders, have been debating the "renovation vs. building a new one" debate for several years.

The engineering study has been sent to eight design teams that have made the cut for the $46 million renovation project.

Six design teams have said they plan to reuse the inverted pyramid. The teams have until Dec. 19 to submit their concepts for the next pier.
