More information has been released regarding the doomsday prepper who was arrested in Citrus County.

According to federal investigators, Michael Paul Watkins was getting ready for the U.S. economy to collapse. Federal agents say he was building a bunker in the back of his Citrus Springs home and stashing away weapons. Linda Kearce lives right down the road.

"My husband and I had thought about having a meet your neighbor," she said. "I'm glad we didn't do that!"

Tuesday morning federal agents and Citrus County deputies searched Watkins' home. They say they found 150 firearms including 20 AK-47's, shotguns, handguns, several thousand rounds of ammo and 17 homemade pipe bombs.

"That's the scary part about it," Kearce said. "What was he going to do with them?"

Investigators say Watkins had somebody buy some of the guns for him because he's a convicted felon. Deputies got a tip in early October and started the investigation.

For a longtime, a lot of neighbors like Cindy Green have been wondering what's been going on at the house with all the construction activity. Now they know.

"I'm glad they figured out what was going on and got him out of our neighborhood," she said.

Investigators say Watkins had been busy stashing firearms for more than a year.

He has been charged with possessing firearms and ammunition as a convicted felon and manufacturing unregistered weapons.
