Florida Hospital is unveiling a state-of-the-art emergency department, but the new advances have nothing to do with the technology.

Officials cut the ribbon on the new 48-bed, 50,000 square-foot facility Thursday night.

It's nearly three times larger than the current ER, but aside from bigger rooms and better lighting, doctors are starting a new way of treating patients who come in called Dr.1st.

"When patients come in they're going to see an emergency physician right away," said Medical Director of the Emergency Department, Dr. Wenz Tirheimer. "So I'll be working with triage nurses and techs. I'll evaluate what the patients needs and then I'll put in orders right away."

All the ER doctors went through Dr.1st training in Ohio where the program is already in use. The new emergency department opens in November.
